ถ้านับว่ากาแฟต้นแรกของประเทศไทยถูกปักลงดินที่ไหน ก็อาจกล่าวได้ว่ากาแฟต้นแรกถูกปลูกลงดินเมื่อประมาณปี พ.ศ. 2447 ที่แดนใต้ในอำเภอสะบ้าย้อย จังหวัดสงขลา โดยคุณตีหมุน ชาวไทยอิสลามนำเข้ามาจากประเทศอินโดนีเซีย ซึ่งเป็นกาแฟสายพันธุ์โรบัสต้า เมื่อกาแฟสายพันธุ์นี้ให้ผลผลิตได้ดี จึงมีการขยายและส่งเสริมการปลูกไปทั่วทั้งตอนใต้ของไทย เวลาผ่านไปมีพืชเศรษฐกิจที่ให้ผลตอบแทนที่ดีกว่ากาแฟจึงถูกโค่นทิ้ง เพื่อนำต้นยางพาราและปาล์มมาปลูกแทน ส่งผลให้พื้นที่ปลูกกาแฟลดลงจากพืชเศรษฐกิจทั้งยางพาราและปาล์ม ที่ถือเป็นเส้นเลือดใหญ่ของเกษตรกรใต้มานาน วันนี้อ่อนแรงตีบตันลง หลายภาคส่วน จึงมองหาวิธีรักษา และ “กาแฟสายพันธ์ุอราบิก้า” ก็ถูกเสนอชื่อให้เป็นตัวเลือกในการแก้ปัญหานี้
นักวิชาการด้านเกษตรระบุลักษณะที่เหมาะสมในการปลูกกาแฟสายพันธุ์อราบิก้า ไว้ว่า ควรปลูกในพื้นที่ๆ สูงจากระดับน้ำทะเลตั้งแต่ 800 ถึง 1,000 เมตรขึ้นไป มีอุณหภูมิเฉลี่ยประมาณ 15 - 25 องศาเซลเซียสความชื้นมากกว่าร้อยละ 60 ปริมาณน้ำฝนไม่ต่ำกว่า 1,500 มิลลิเมตรต่อปีและมีดินที่อุดมสมบูรณ์ อีกทั้งยังต้องสามารถระบายน้ำได้ดี สิ่งเหล่านี้จักมอบคุณภาพอันเปี่ยมเอกลักษณ์ทางรสชาติ สัมผัส และกลิ่นรสแก่เมล็ดกาแฟสายพันธุ์นี้ได้ดีที่สุด
ที่จังหวัดตรัง คุณถนอมชัย ธณธี เจ้าของสวนกาแฟไร่อ่างทองเดิมประกอบอาชีพเป็นเกษตรกรเลี้ยงกุ้งในพื้นที่มาก่อน เขารู้สึกอิ่มตัวต่อการทำงานภายใต้ความกดดันต่อความเสี่ยงของธุรกิจเลี้ยงกุ้ง จึงเข้ามาดูแลกิจการสวนยางพาราของครอบครัว บนเนื้อที่กว่า 18 ไร่ ประกอบกับหลุมพรางหรือความหวังใหม่ของเกษตรกรปลายด้ามขวานสถานการณ์ราคายางพาราตกต่ำ เขาจึงนำแนวคิดการปลูกพืชเสริมที่จะเข้ามาชดเชยรายได้ที่ขาดหายไป ด้วยการนำกาแฟกลับมาปลูกในพื้นที่ภาคใต้อีกครั้ง แต่คราวนี้ไม่ใช่สายพันธุ์โรบัสต้าแบบเดิมแต่เปลี่ยนเป็นสายพันธุ์อราบิก้าแทน
“ผมเป็นคนชอบกินกาแฟอราบิก้า จึงเริ่มทดลองปลูก ลองผิดลองถูกจากตอนแรก ๆ ไม่ได้คัดเลือกสายพันธุ์ซื้อมาทดลองเรื่อย ๆ รู้ตัวอีกทีก็มีกาแฟกว่า 8,000 ต้น บางส่วนก็ให้ผลผลิตดี 3 - 4 กิโลกรัม บางส่วนก็ให้ผลผลิตแค่ 20 - 30 เมล็ด บางต้นไม่มีผลผลิตเลยก็มีหลังทดลองปลูก จึงรู้ว่าสายพันธุ์ที่เหมาะสมกับคุณภาพดินและอุณหภูมิ ซึ่งเป็นปัจจัยอย่างหนึ่งที่มีผลต่อการเจริญเติบโตและผลผลิตท้ายสุดจึงเลือกกาแฟสายพันธุ์อราบิก้าคาร์ติมอร์ นำมาจากจังหวัดเชียงราย”
Where is the first coffee tree in Thailand was planted? The first coffee tree of Thailand was
planted in the ground around 1934, at Saba Yoi district, Songkhla province, in the south of Thailand by Mr. Teemun, Thai – Muslim man, he brought the coffee tree from Indonesia, which was Robusta. Since this type of coffee gives a good result, therefore it has been expanded and promoted to planted throughout the southern part of Thailand. Many years later, there are economic crops that gives better incomes. Hence coffee trees were cutting down for planting the rubber trees and palm trees instead, resulting in reduced coffee growing areas. Both rubber trees and palm trees are economic crops that likened the large artery of southern farmer for a long time, but now that the large artery is in the act of weakened. Therefore, many sectors are looking for a cure, and “Arabica coffee” was chosen as an option to help solve this problem.
Agriculture scholars have identified the suitable characteristics for growing Arabica coffee that it should be planted in areas that are higher than sea level from 800 - 1,000 meters or more, the average temperature should be around 15 - 25 degrees Celsius, the humidity should be more than 60 percent and the rainfall should not be less than 1,500 millimeters per year. Moreover, those areas should have fertile soil and must be able to drained well. All these factors will result in higher quality of identities in flavor and aroma for Arabica coffee.
In Trang province, Mr.Tanomchai Thanathee, who is an owner of Ang Thong Coffee farm (Rai Ang Thong), had a career as a shrimp farmer in the area before. He felt saturated with working under pressure on the risk of shrimp farming business. Therefore he took over the family business, the rubber plantation, on an area of over 18 Rai (around 7.11 acre). With the situation of decrease in rubber prices, he had an idea of planting extra crops to compensate for the missing income by
bringing coffee to plant in the southern again. However, this time it was not Robusta, but Arabica instead.
“I like to drink Arabica coffee, so I began to try to planted it. From the beginning, no specifically species were selected, I bought so many coffee trees and then I realized, there are over 8,000 coffee trees. Some trees give 3 - 4 kilograms, some trees give only 20 - 30 coffee cherries and some trees did not give anything. After trying to plant, I known that I should select the types coffee which is suitable with the quality and temperature of the soil here, because these two factors affect in the growth and productivity. Finally, I chose Arabica Cartimor coffee which were brought from Chaing Rai to planted in this area”
